If I was to ask you to rate your energy out of 10 through the week, what would you say?
If we want to be at the top of our game, we need a consistent high level of energy, but the truth is over 75% of us are feeling exhausted and lack of energy is now the most common health complaint. The good news is that because it is generally our lifestyle habits that are to blame, making small changes to these habits can have us feeling full of zing and on top form again.
So exactly what sort of habits do we need to build in order to have our energy soaring?
At Zenergos we talk a lot about the importance of building physical fitness and stamina for work. In my previous blog about the six steps to a good night’s sleep, I talked about the fundamental of building good sleep habits and breaking bad ones. Today however, I want us to talk about exercise.
We often treat exercise and fitness like a vanity, something we do to shed a few pounds and look good in our clothes. But exercise is so much more valuable than that. Actually when you look at consistent high performers they have an unwavering stamina, and this they get from having good physical habits, particularly exercise.
However what most of us will say is that by the time we get home from work we simply don’t have enough time nor energy to exercise.
‘I’m too tired to go to the gym’
Research suggests, and any avid fitness buffs will agree, that rather than drain us of our energy, exercise is the quickest way to build it and for the long term. Apart from the obvious increase in oxygen helping our brains perform better, when we exercise, a signal is sent to our body to create more energy to cope with the increased demand. This happens on a cellular level.
In each of our cells we have tiny powerhouses called mitochondria whose job it is to create this energy for us, they do this by replicating. The more exercise we do, the more energy our body needs and the more mitochondria are created in response. This is called Mitochondrial Biogenesis and importantly the increased energy is felt long after the exercise is finished.
This gives us the stamina we need for our busy lives.
‘I haven’t got time to exercise’
If we are always busy and we feel like we are always working, just when do we fit this exercise in?
At Zenergos, we urge individuals and companies to think very differently about wellbeing in today’s 24/7 world and we ask leaders to actively encourage their people to build wellness, including exercise, into their working week and not after work has finished. If we want sustained high performance, we need to view exercise like one of the most important parts of our jobs and not a luxury of time.
So make excercise part of every day. Treat it like a meeting – put it in your diary and don’t move it, so that you are committed. Involve somebody else – if you are meeting a friend, you are more likely to stick with it. Finally turn technology to your advantage, as it allows us to work in a more flexible way, so we can exercise during the day and then work later on.
